About this place
Alcatraz was a federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963, and today it's one of the most visited sites of the National Park Service. The cellhouse, the views of the city and the stories of its famous inmates make it a San Francisco must.
Only one company may carry visitors to the island: Alcatraz City Cruises. Tickets often sell out weeks ahead in summer, so book early through them.
